<image:title>About - Contemporary Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Many of the works by modern and contemporary artists came directly from the artist themselves or through galleries. The Maddens developed special relationships with many of the artists, like Chen Chi, Robert Rauschenberg (who Mr. Madden calls “Bob”), Wilson Hurley, and local artist, Daniel Sprick, with multiple artworks by each represented in the collection. Where many are collected for their aesthetic appeal, the Maddens more importantly wanted to collect works by artists they knew and who they wanted to support.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Historic 19th- and Early 20th Century Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Together John and Marjorie traveled the world, collecting art that piqued their interest. A favorite destination of the Maddens was Florence where they bought many paintings by late 19th-century Tuscan artists. The Maddens also admired great American artists like Thomas Hart Benton, acquiring their paintings as well. Many of these American works also reveal John Madden's affinity for rural scenes like farming and the working of the land that connected him back to his Nebraska roots.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Glass and Sculpture</image:title>
<image:caption>A portion of the Madden Collection includes sculpture, the majority of which are made from glass. Many of the glass works are vases and were created by a variety of manufacturers and artists, including the Tiffany & Company and Dale Chihuly. There are a few other sculptural works in the collection as well, such as a ceramic life-sized work by Viola Frey and a wooden life-size work by Jim Dine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Student Opportunities - Condition Reporting Workshops</image:title>
<image:caption>To condition report is to document details about the current condition of a work of art and associated parts like its frame or base. It is an accurate and informative account of an object’s state of preservation at a particular moment in time. We conduct condition reporting frequently to not only properly care for the objects at the museum, but to provide students with skills for their future careers as condition reporting is a valuable tool for managing collections, and training offers a systematic approach to reviewing the condition of items in our collection, as well as a consistent framework, and a set of terms for making useful reports. Workshops are conducted frequently. The largest occurred over a five-day period in April 2019 when graduate students documented the current condition of over a 100 art objects displayed at the Madden Museum.</image:caption>

<image:title>Student Opportunities - Studio Art Classes</image:title>
<image:caption>The museum provides opportunities for students studying fine art to work directly from art objects on exhibit. In fall 2020, the Madden Museum transformed into a painting and drawing studio for 10 fine art students under the direction of painting Professor Deborah Howard. Using the Madden Collection as inspiration, the students created original works of art.</image:caption>

<image:title>Student Opportunities - Art Handling Training</image:title>
<image:caption>Art Handling Training is required of all staff and students working at the Madden Museum. While the training was designed specifically to prepare students for their future careers in the museum field, this training assures consistency across our organization and allows us to properly care for the collections exhibited and stored at the museum but elsewhere across DU. We advocate for museum industry standards concerning art storage and handling, and our trainings has helped form skilled curators, collection managers, preparators, and the like, who all are critical to the livelihood of arts organizations far and wide, from small community non-profit art spaces and private collections to major cultural institutions and commercial galleries. DU is committed to industry-wide best practices and standards to preserve and protect art and artifacts and continue to enrich the lives of present and future generations of students and the community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Led by instructor and Madden Museum Program Director, students enrolled in Curatorial Practicum work collaboratively to plan and execute an exhibition to be displayed at the Madden Museum of Art. The process may include choosing a theme and selecting works of art, researching artists and themes, developing a budget, scheduling, an exhibition checklist, modeling the gallery, visual exhibition design, keeping in mind conservation and collections management factors, shipping, installation, educational outreach to the public, publicity, and other issues related to exhibition planning.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Humans and landscapes are inextricably linked. In turn, landscapes’ climate and natural phenomena and personal and cultural symbolism affect humans. The works in this section ultimately reflect the artistic and physical agency of both humans and landscapes, each acting on the other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Exhibitions - Tracing Traditions</image:title>

<image:caption>Wilson Hurley was an American painter known for his vast landscape scenes made during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Hurley was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in Virginia and New Mexico. In his first memory from before grade school, he had found some pastels and attempted to make the paper show light. He showed natural talent, and during his teen years his mother, Ruth Wilson Hurley, arranged for him to spend time with artists such as Theodore Van Solen, Josef Bakos, and John Young-Hunter. His father, Patrick J. Hurley, was Secretary of War during the Hoover administration, and encouraged more manly activities such as riding bucking horses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bierstadt - Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Mountain Landscape, c. 1880-82, Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 19 5/8 x 13 ¼ in. (unframed), Signed lower left, The Madden Collection at the University of Denver, 2016.1.5</image:title>
<image:caption>Although a precise location can only be speculated, Mountain Landscape was undoubtedly inspired by one of Albert Bierstadt's many trips to the American West. Beginning in 1859, the artist traveled to the Rocky Mountains and other Western locales to transform his country's newest territories into a personal artistic muse. Following these trips, Bierstadt returned to his studio in New Bedford, and later New York, to paint grand panoramas, which he then sent on tours throughout the East. Bierstadt's profound fascination with the American West is visually manifested in Mountain Landscape. Significantly, the compositional design recorded in this painting relates to other works by the artist from Yosemite and numerous other Rocky Mountain locales. Here, the artist creates a dramatic vertical climb through the description of a majestic towering mount. Using variations in texture and color, Bierstadt creatively forms detailed nuances in the mountain's faade that produce waves of light and naturally shaped crags. Glints of white and blue are carefully lodged within small fissures to indicate both snow, and perhaps moving water. Diminutive boulders located in front of the large, darker cliff express the grandness of both precipices, leaving the viewer to contemplate the size and vastness of the presented landscape. A grouping of indigenous coniferous trees elegantly echoes the mountain outlined at back and firmly place the viewer in the unexplored territory of Bierstadt's American West.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fleeting Presence: The Liminal Art of Daniel Sprick - About the Exhibition</image:title>
<image:caption>Organized by a cohort of sixteen students from the School of Art & Art History at the University of Denver, this exhibition explores formal and thematic tensions in the work of Colorado artist Daniel Sprick. Through his adept handling of form, space, color, and light, Sprick creates hauntingly beautiful paintings rooted in the realism of Dutch artists like Johannes Vermeer. His paintings reflect our world back to us, but it’s a world imbued with hints of melancholy and hidden meaning. Embracing ambiguity, Sprick’s art brings together seeming opposites – life and death, stillness and dynamism, transience and permanence – transforming our everyday existence into something magical and mysterious. Curated by: Lauren Anuszewski, Sydney Barofsky, Alex Blom, Seb Brady, Lexi Ferenzi, Morgan Fleetwood, McKenna Gale, James Grau, Allene Leak, Patrick Lucas, Sydney McCain, Anna McDonald, Claire Motsinger, Andrew Nadeau, Emily Oxford-Pickeral, and Jordan Reed. Read the Denver Post’s review of the exhibition.</image:caption>
